These sweet digs come fully equipped with a boat dock and a helicopter pad.
You may be thinking, “how can a private island exist in New York City?” Well, it can’t. BUT, this 10-acre private island is located just an hours drive outside of the city in Carmel, New York. If you’re lucky enough to own a private helicopter, it’s “just a quick ride away from Manhattan or Westchester Airport” according to the listing.
Petre Island- or Petra Island as some pronounce it- is home to two architectural treasures of the famed American architect Frank Llyod Wright; one is a 1950’s style guest cottage and the other an enormous four-bedroom estate with a tea house, private beach and dock. The island itself is surrounded by the 593-acre Lake Mahopac.
Pictured below is the spot to park your private helicopter (although I’m doubting as to whether or not this was Frank Lloyd Wright’s original intention). According to Curbed, Frank Lloyd Wright designed a 5,000 square foot home for the island in 1950 but ended up building the small cottage instead when the owner of the property was unable to pay for the original design.
Years later, a new owner had the original design built based around Lloyd Wright’s design and floorplans. However, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has refused to recognize it as an authentic Wright design. Hmm, the controversy!
The home has been on and off the market for years. It was previously listed on the market in 2017 for $15 million but failed to sell. It’s now back on at a discounted asking price of $12.9 million.
The views are pretty fantastic though!
