It’s a sad day for theatre culture.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s longest-running production and London West End stalwart ‘The Phantom Of The Opera” is closing indefinitely, after a steady 34-year run. [Featured image: Phantom Of The Opera, Instagram]
Due to the cancellations, postponements, and the difficulties of socially-distant theatre throughout the pandemic, some tricky decisions had to be made. Unfortunately this means The Phantom Of The Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre has been forced to close.
Talking to The Evening Standard, show producer Cameron Mackintosh said: “‘When COVID hit, all my eight theatres were packed with hit shows including some of my own. So as by far the largest independent employer in the West End it is not surprising that as both theatre owner and producer, with no outside investors, I’ve taken a huge financial hit.
“On top of this, Andrew and I have had to sadly permanently shut down our London and UK touring productions of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, but are determined to bring it back to London in the future.”
Hopefully, we will see the famous show back one day soon, and that this does not become a familiar tale for other productions.
