Ole & Steen opened its first location in Copenhagen in 1991 and has since expanded to 90 locations across Denmark and the UK.
This week, they’ve crossed the pond into New York City. The popular bakery is known for its high quality and whole ingredients and for promoting that popular word that’s been going around Instagram and YouTube known as Hggye. Pronounced “hoog- ah” this term is meant to encapsulate the idea comfort and Danish hospitality.
Of course, a bakery is more than just a philosophy and a certain type of homey decor. Breakfast, which includes a selection of yogurts, porridge, toasts, and rolls is served until 11:30 am. Brunch, which includes a much more robust selection of food is served until 5 pm. Their all-day menu includes various hot options like soups and gourmet sandwiches, salads and grains and of course all the pastries you could imagine. If you plan on staying later, they also have a selection of wine and Danish beer.
They have a bit of everything that you can expect from a bakery on sale; from rustic breads:
To creamy deserts:
To smooth coffee:
And delicious sandwiches and toasts:
Their specialty is this incredible “Puff.”
