The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a wind advisory for NYC, effective until 10pm tonight (January 2nd, 2025). The advisory extends to other areas including parts of southern Connecticut and northeast New Jersey.
A wind advisory is issued when strong winds are apparent, but not strong enough to require a high wind warning. An advisory is different from a wind watch and warning. The NWS urges people to be cautious while driving in a wind advisory, and that outdoor objects be secured.
While the wind advisory remains in effect, NYC can expect wind gusts between 15 – 30 mph, and up to 50 mph, with isolated gusts possibly reaching 55 mph. These estimated strong winds could potentially bring down trees and tree limbs, result in power outages, and scatter unsecured objects.
Among the strong winds, NYC will see close to normal temperatures for today, reaching a high in the lower 40s. But don’t forget that NYC is expected to have the coldest January in 13 years thanks to a polar vortex.
