New Yorkers planning to travel this weekend may want to give themselves a little extra time.
A sweeping travel advisory from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey warns that multiple airports, bridges, tunnels, and transit hubs across the region will see closures, detours, and service changes through March 12.
The biggest disruptions involve ongoing construction at JFK Airport, a temporary rail shutdown at Newark Liberty International Airport, and overnight lane closures across major crossings like the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, and Holland Tunnel.
Officials are urging travelers to use mass transit whenever possible and expect delays if driving to airports or crossing between New York and New Jersey.
Below is a running list of the major travel impacts happening across NYC from March 6 – 12.
Last updated: March 6, 2026

Airports & Flights
JFK Airport
Major construction tied to the airport’s $19 billion redevelopment project is currently affecting traffic flow throughout JFK.
Travelers heading to the airport should expect roadway detours, rerouted traffic patterns, and congestion near terminals. The Port Authority strongly recommends taking public transit when possible.
The easiest options right now include:
- Long Island Rail Road to Jamaica Station, then connecting to AirTrain JFK
- NYC subway or buses to Jamaica or Howard Beach, followed by AirTrain
- Using the free drop-off and pickup lot at the AirTrain Lefferts Boulevard station
From there, the AirTrain ride to terminals takes about eight minutes.
Additional changes are also impacting specific terminals:
Terminal 5
- Ride-share pickups are temporarily relocated to the Howard Beach Ride App & Car Services Lot
- Taxi stands have moved to the Yellow Parking Garage
- Level 1 parking is reserved for accessibility parking only
Terminal 7
- Arrivals have moved to the Orange Garage
- Taxi stands are now located at the departures level
- Ride-share pickups also operate from the Howard Beach lot
Drivers heading to the airport should also note a new roadway configuration:
- Use the Van Wyck Expressway for Terminals 1 and 4
- Use the JFK Expressway for Terminals 5, 7, and 8

Newark Airport
A temporary rail shutdown will affect travelers heading to Newark Liberty International Airport this weekend.
From 9:30 pm Saturday, March 7 through 10 am Sunday, March 8, the Newark Liberty Airport Train Station will be closed while crews work on the AirTrain Newark replacement project.
During this window:
- All rail service to the airport station will be suspended
- Free shuttle buses will run between Newark Penn Station and the P4 AirTrain station
- AirTrain service between airport terminals will still operate normally
Travelers heading to Newark should budget extra time and follow signage for the temporary shuttle connection.
LaGuardia Airport
There are no major closures currently planned at LaGuardia, but officials are encouraging travelers to use public transit due to limited parking availability.
The Q70 LaGuardia Link bus remains free year-round and connects directly to subway and Long Island Rail Road lines in Queens.
PATH Service Updates
PATH riders should expect heavier crowding at Hoboken and other stations during weekday rush hours as NJ Transit rail passengers are temporarily diverted to PATH trains.
Overnight maintenance will also affect service at two stations:
- 9 St and 23 St stations close nightly from 11:59 pm to 5 am
- Riders can instead use Christopher St or 33 St stations
At the World Trade Center station, overnight access is limited between 1 am and 5 am, with entry only available through street entrances at Fulton Street or Vesey Street.
Bridges & Tunnels Lane Closures
Several major crossings between New York and New Jersey will see lane closures overnight and during off-peak hours this weekend and into next week.
George Washington Bridge
Multiple lane closures are scheduled across both the upper and lower levels.
Key impacts include:
- Friday night through Saturday morning: several eastbound and westbound lane closures
- Saturday daytime: one eastbound lane closed on the upper level
- Weekday daytime closures next week: additional ramp and lane restrictions
- Overnight closures Monday through Thursday: all westbound lower-level lanes closed during overnight hours
Drivers heading between Manhattan and New Jersey should expect delays overnight and during midday construction windows.
Lincoln Tunnel
The Lincoln Tunnel will see overnight tube closures throughout the weekend and early next week.
Scheduled impacts include:
- Saturday morning: south tube closed
- Sunday morning: south tube closed again
- Monday early morning: south tube closure
- Monday and Tuesday nights: center tube closed
- Wednesday and Thursday nights: north tube closed
Traffic will be redirected through remaining open tubes.
Holland Tunnel
Overnight lane closures are planned Sunday through Thursday nights.
From 11 pm to early morning, one lane in each direction will close for maintenance work.
Bayonne Bridge
On Tuesday and Wednesday, one lane in each direction will close between 9 am and 2 pm
Outerbridge Crossing
Drivers should expect lane closures during overnight construction windows.
- Saturday early morning: one westbound lane closed
- Monday through Thursday nights: additional overnight closures
What travelers should know
Officials are urging anyone traveling this weekend to plan ahead and allow extra time.
The Port Authority says construction projects, airport upgrades, and overnight maintenance are all contributing to the temporary disruptions.
Travelers should consider taking public transit to airports whenever possible, especially as ongoing construction continues to reshape traffic patterns around JFK.
If you’re flying out of the city, it may also be worth double-checking that your ID is REAL ID compliant, since the TSA no longer accepts certain state IDs at security checkpoints and you’ll have to pay $45 if you don’t have it.
