After Mayor Eric Adams broke the internet over announcing the “Trash Revolution” in July, the time has come for the ruling to be put into place.
Warning period for NYC trash rules
Property owners of low-density residential buildings with one to nine units were given until January 2, 2025 to put their trash in containers, or face non-compliance penalties. And yet, it seems many are at risk of such penalties after the DSNY issued nearly 70,000 warnings since November 12, 2024.
Official NYC Bin requirements
As of now, property owners can still use compliant, existing bins to dispose of their trash. However, by 2026, impacted property owners must use the official NYC Bin. The most common size costs around $50. The NYC Bin offers mobility with attached wheels and a secure latching lid.
According to Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, the bins are custom made to work with NYC’s garbage trucks and “are the key to keeping our most precious real estate — New York City sidewalks — clear.” Bins can be purchased online at www.bins.nyc.
NYC penalties for non-compliance
As of last week (January 2, 2025), affected property owners must follow the outlined container requirements. Individuals committing a first offense by not using a 55 gallon or less secure bin to dispose of trash on the street will be subject to a $50 fine. The fee doubles for each following offense ($100 for a second offense and $200 for the third). Again, it won’t be until June 2026 that the specific use of the official NYC Bin will be mandatory.
