Yesterday, Wednesday July 19, Mayor Eric Adams launched the competition for the first-ever Riders’ Choice Award, a competition that allows New Yorkers to vote for their favorite addition to the MTA’s “Music Under New York” roster of subway performers.
Sponsored by the WE❤️NYC campaign, the Riders’ Choice Award shines a light on artists who have won spots in the MTA “Music Under New York” program. The program has been bringing music to New Yorkers’ commutes since 1985.
And this year is the first time NYC straphangers have the opportunity to select their favorite NYC subway performer!
More than 40 performers out of 128 applicants auditioned at Grand Central Madison back in June. 24 of those performers were then accepted into the program with three finalists chosen to compete to win the free recording session.
Representing some of city’s most exciting and diverse musical talent, the three Riders’ Choice finalists include:
- Afro Dominicano — A Latin fusion band that blends traditional Dominican folkloric roots music with Afro-Caribbean soul. They are known for their high-energy riffs and romantic balladry.
- Augie Bello — An instrumentalist, vocalist, producer, and songwriter known for his energetic live saxophone performances on the streets of the city.
- Brass Queens — An all-female brass band with a signature sound that sits at the intersection of the Big Apple and the Big Easy. They are known for their high-energy performances and their mission to empower women through music.
“Our subways keep New Yorkers moving, but they also keep our toes tapping thanks to great musicians who spread joy on the platform,” said Mayor Adams. “‘Music Under New York’ supports more than 350 talented musicians on subway and train platforms across New York City, spreading joy from station to station.”
New Yorkers can watch videos of each finalist and cast their vote here. Votes can be cast through Wednesday, July 26, with the winner to be announced the following day on Thursday, July 27.
The winning NYC subway performer will receive a recording session with Atlantic Records.
