It’s hard to believe that the new year is already pulling into the station! Alongside goals and new adventures, New Yorkers can also look forward to brand-new subway improvements that keep the city moving forward. With fresh platforms, smoother connections and new accessibility additions, you can ride toward your resolutions right on schedule.
2025 was an impressive year for transit improvement, with newly renovated stations, tech improvements, and even the safest year for subways in over 16 years. According to an MTA press release, throughout the end of 2025, comprehensive projects transformed stations, brightening platforms, modernizing infrastructure, and creating a cleaner, safer, and more reliable experience for riders.
Here’s what to look out for as you ride into 2026.

💡 New LED lighting
Good news for late night riders! All 472 subway stations are now lit with cost-efficient LED lighting as part of Governor Hochul’s five-point Subway Safety Plan, bringing brighter platforms, better visibility, and added security across the system. he upgraded lighting improves visibility for riders, enhances the effectiveness of surveillance cameras, and helps create a safer, more welcoming environment at all hours.
🔧 More efficient stations
New York City Transit pushed forward its State of Good Repair commitment in 2025, completing 40 “Revive” projects throughout the system. These targeted station renewals focused on cleaner spaces, better lighting, clearer signage, and essential repairs—small but meaningful upgrades that riders feel every day. Together, these improvements are helping stations look better, function better, and reflect the pride of the neighborhoods they serve.
🧽 A cleaner way to ride
Cleanliness has remained a major focus as well, with more than 2,600 tons of trash removed from subway stations and tracks this year alone. From platforms to tunnels, crews worked around the clock to clear debris, improve air quality, and reduce fire and safety risks. The result is a subway system that not only moves New York forward, but does so in a cleaner, brighter, and safer way—one station at a time.
New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow said:
NYC Transit is committed to providing safe and reliable service and that effort starts right when customers enter the system with brighter and cleaner stations. With historically high on-time performance, new ridership milestones and a continued emphasis on reviving stations, 2025 was a great year to be a subway rider.
We can’t wait to see what new adventures New York City brings our way in 2026—and one thing is certain: we’ll be arriving at every stop through cleaner, brighter, and more efficient stations, ready to keep the city moving forward. Happy New Year, NYC!
