Ah yes, we’ve reached that magical time of year when New York reminds us who’s really in charge.
Of course, even at its coldest, we wouldn’t want to be anywhere but our favorite city. Still, it’s safe to say we don’t have to tell you just how brutal it’s been lately—especially if you’ve stepped outside at any point this week. If you haven’t, consider us deeply jealous. If you have, we hope you’ve thawed enough to prepare for what’s coming next.
You’ll want to dust any remaining flakes from last Sunday off of your black puffer—or possibly invest in something even heavier—because this weekend is gearing up to give last weekend’s snow a very real run for its money.
It was reported in late 2025 that NYC would be experiencing its snowiest winter in 5 years, and the past few weeks have yet to prove that statistic wrong. Unfortunately, or fortunately for snow lovers, hopeless romantic and people with remote jobs, there’s no end in sight.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service say the city could be staring down six inches or more of snow between Sunday and Monday, courtesy of a low-pressure system sliding through the region like it owns the place. The snow is expected to kick off late Saturday night—right around 1 a.m., with about a 50% chance—because of course it would wait until you’re asleep to start causing problems.

By Sunday, snow is likely to stick around, with highs struggling to reach 19°F and additional accumulation very much on the table. Monday isn’t totally off the hook either, with snow potentially lingering and a 30% chance of precipitation to keep things interesting. And by “interesting,” we mean, well, unpleasant.
Some reports — including forecasts found on the iPhone weather app — suggest that we could receive double the amount, closer to 12 inches of snow. However, the National Weather Forecast revealed in a post on X on Wednesday morning that we’ll know more details as we get closer to the weekend: “Specific details on exact timing and amounts will become clearer over the next few days.”
As if the snow weren’t enough, the cold isn’t going anywhere. We’ll see more of this week’s arctic blasts, with temperatures expected to hover in the teens for much of the week, making every errand feel like an endurance sport. NYC Emergency Management is warning of dangerous conditions, particularly for anyone without reliable heat or proper winter gear—so now is very much the time to check in on neighbors, layer up like a professional, and limit time outdoors when possible.
City sanitation crews are already at work clearing snow from steps, crosswalks, and pedestrian areas, but homeowners are urged to do their part too—especially when it comes to preventing frozen pipes, which no one wants to deal with in February. If you’re driving, make sure your vehicle is stocked with an emergency kit, because winter in New York has a habit of testing even the best-laid plans.
In short: bundle up, slow down, and maybe cancel any plans that require joy or exposed skin. Winter is not done with us yet—and it’s making that very clear.
