Commuting through New York City is about to get a whole lot brighter–and more navigable.
A $7 billion renovation is underway to reinvent Penn Station as a “world-class NYC travel destination.” The dingy underground maze will be replaced by a modern 250,000-square-foot facility, and the station will finally trade its low ceilings for sun-lit halls.
Travelers can also expect new local retailers, dining options, and mixed-income housing integrated right into the project.
Penn Station is more than just a train stop–it is the busiest rail hub in the Western Hemisphere. Serving over 700,000 daily riders across Amtrak, NJ Transit, and the Long Island Rail Road, it is a critical artery that fuels the city’s economy.
Here’s everything we know so far about the transformation of Penn Station.

🚉 A Single-Level Transit Hub
Decades in the making and one of the biggest and most significant construction projects in U.S.history, key points of the project are as follows:

- Timeline: major construction is slated to begin in late 2027, following the selection of a master developer in May 2026
- Key Part of Transformation: aims to deliver a “gleaming monument” worthy of New York City, featuring bright concourses with natural light
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated:
Crumbling infrastructure, bleak and dirty architecture, unnavigable hallways, and no inviting spaces for families with kids – the current state of Penn Station is unacceptable…we will transform Penn Station into a world-class transit hub that is beautiful, safe, and clean.

🚆 Management and Vision
- Lead Agency: Amtrak has taken the lead on the project, supported by a $43 million federal grant for design and developer selection.
