In a little over a month before the NYC mayoral election this November, NYC Mayor Eric Adams revealed that he is not seeking re-election.
The news broke on Sunday, September 28th, when Adams dropped a nearly nine-minute long video from Gracie Mansion on social media detailing his decision.
“When I was elected to serve as your mayor I said these words, ‘This campaign was never about me. It was about the people of this city, from every neighborhood and background who have been left behind and believed they’d never catch up,'” Adams attested.
Here’s what you need to know as the city’s mayoral election shifts.
NYC Mayor Eric Adams drops his re-election bid
According to The New York Times, Adams will serve the remainder of his term and remain on the ballot because the deadline to have it changed has since passed.
He does not go on to reveal future plans, nor does he endorse Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, or former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, both of whom will be running against the Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
“New Yorkers should be suspicious of any politician or political movement that claims we must wholesale destroy the systems we created together over generations in order to usher in a new, untested order led by self-styled saviors,” Adams said.
