Yesterday, a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol.
The center of our country was put on lockdown, and four people died, all in an attempt to overturn legal election votes from U.S. citizens. And today, NYC leaders and lawmakers are calling for the President’s removal from office for inciting the violent riots and continuing to tout evidence-less claims of a “rigged” election.
Most are calling for the 25th amendement to be invoked, which states:
“Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.”
If the Presidential Cabinet fails to do so, many are asking that a second impeachment proceeding take place.
Here are their statements:
Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York City:
Yesterday, Donald Trump incited a mob to attack our government and democracy.
THIS is treason.
THIS is the path to fascism.
THIS is the endgame of the racist movement the president has fostered for four years.Remove him from office. NOW.#25thAmendmentNow

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, US Representative, NY-14 (the Bronx & Queens):
If the 25th amendment is not invoked today, Congress must reconvene immediately for impeachment and removal proceedings.
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) January 7, 2021
Our republic is in great danger, and it is imperiled further without swift action to protect it.
The President incited an attack on Congress. He is deeply unstable. The Cabinet must invoke the 25th amendment.
Congress must also pursue impeachment and removal of the President.

Ritchie Torres, Congressman, NY-15 (The Bronx):
President @realDonaldTrump has spent months telling inflammatory lies and instigating a violent mob to storm into the Capitol in an attempt at derailing the peaceful transfer of power. Invoke the 25th Amendment. Immediately.

Nydia Velazquez, US Representative, NY-7 (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan):
President Trump needs to step down. He is unhinged and unfit. If he does not, the 25th Amendment needs to be invoked. My full statement: https://t.co/GZS5ao3ghW

Brad Hoylman, NY Senator, 27th District (Manhattan):
Donald Trump needs to be impeached and removed from office immediately.

Chuck Schumer, New York’s Senator and Senate Democratic Leader:
The quickest and most effective way—it can be done today—to remove this president from office would be for the Vice President to immediately invoke the 25th amendment.
If the Vice President and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress must reconvene to impeach President Trump.
