Heavy traffic, wailing sirens, and endless scaffolding form the daily soundtrack of Manhattan.
Escaping the noise usually involves a long subway ride or battling the massive tourist crowds at Central Park.
But tucked onto a quiet block in the East Village lies a completely different reality.
At the 6BC Botanical Garden (located on E. 6th St. between Avenues B and C), the foliage grows so thick that the surrounding brick architecture practically disappears.
It’s a lush, verdant urban oasis—and the best part? Admission is completely free.
Scaling a Manhattan treehouse
Walking through the garden’s large cast-iron gates shifts your perspective immediately.
Instead of fire escapes and concrete, you look up into a heavy leaf canopy and wandering stone paths.
Past the blooming flower beds and tranquil koi pond sits the real draw: a wooden treehouse built directly into the landscape.
Covered in twisting greenery, it almost looks like an illusion.
Whether you’re interested in reenacting a scene from High School Musical in Troy’s backyard, or you’d rather just cozy up in a quiet place with a good book, climbing the steps of this treehouse will lead you to a calm sanctuary in the sky that overlooks the entire garden.
You can choose to enjoy the indoor reading nook—complete with multi-pane windows, green walls, and bench seating under rows of bookshelves—or opt for the outside balcony table to breathe in the fresh air that can otherwise be hard to find in the city.
Just be mindful that the treehouse is quite small and popular, so you may have to wait your turn or keep your visit brief so others can enjoy it!

A community-run sanctuary
This incredible space is imbued with a rich history of community activism.
The garden was started back in the 1980s by East Village volunteers who turned an empty, crumbling lot into a thriving horticultural haven.
Through the years, it faced potential destruction from new city developments, but has since been permanently dedicated for public use under the New York City Parks system.
It continues to be community-run by dedicated local volunteers and relies heavily on visitors being respectful and leaving donations.
Beyond boasting a secret treehouse, 6BC Garden is home to a plethora of events, from community jazz performances to private weddings.
Keep up to date on all the upcoming happenings with their event calendar.
Navigating the volunteer schedule
Because local residents maintain this space, access depends on a specific community schedule.
The grounds are typically open April through October (weather permitting).
- Weekends: 12 pm to 6 pm
- Wednesdays & Fridays: 4 pm to 7 pm (or dusk, depending on volunteer availability)
Catching the entrance unlocked offers an unexpected reward: a rare chance to sit above ground level, surrounded by nature, without ever leaving the city grid.
