This may come as no surprise to anyone who’s stepped outside today, but New York City is officially under a heat advisory as a sweltering stretch of summer weather settles over the region.
After a warm and muggy start to the morning, temperatures are expected to climb into the low 90s Thursday afternoon, with humidity making it feel more like 95 to 100+ degrees in some neighborhoods. Forecasters are even warning that parts of the city could approach record-high temperatures before the day is over.
And the heat isn’t the only concern.
An Air Quality Alert has also been issued for New York City and Long Island due to elevated ozone levels, creating potentially unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups.
Later this afternoon and evening, the atmosphere could become even more active as scattered thunderstorms develop, bringing the possibility of damaging winds, hail, and severe weather across portions of the Tri-State Area.

The National Weather Service says the Heat Advisory will last through Friday evening, and meteorologists say another round of oppressive heat and potential strong storms is expected tomorrow before conditions begin to improve heading into the weekend.
If you’re planning to be outdoors, now is the time to take precautions: stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during the hottest hours of the day, seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, and check in on neighbors, older adults, and anyone who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat.
