Our favorite season, Girl Scout cookie season, is in full swing! And if you’re wondering where you can buy Girl Scout cookies in NYC, may we suggest purchasing your cookies from Girl Scouts Troop 6000.
Launched in 2017, Girl Scouts of Greater New York’s Troop 6000 is a first-of-its-kind program designed to serve families living in temporary housing in the New York City shelter system. It was created so families going through homelessness could still participate in the Girl Scout experience.
Each week the Troop holds meetings in shelters across the city, allowing members to “take part in activities that help them make new friends, earn badges, and learn to see themselves as leaders,” according to their website. All required fees, uniforms, trips, and program materials are provided at no cost.
What began as serving just seven Girl Scouts in one family shelter in Queens, Troop 6000 has grown to serve more than 20 shelter sites and more than 2,500 Girl Scouts and adults. In January 2023, the Troop expanded its program to welcome 100+ young arrivals living in New York City Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center to integrate the influx of migrant and asylum-seeking families into their community.
And, you can support them by buying your Girl Scout cookies directly from their troop!
Proceeds from every box sold help the hundreds of Girl Scouts in Troop 6000 go to Girl Scout camp, earn badges, and do so many other fun Girl Scout activities. Don’t like cookies? You can also donate to them directly, or even learn more about volunteering opportunities. If you do volunteer, you’ll not only learn about Girl Scout-ing, but about homelessness and socio-emotional work with children as well.
Every girl in the five boroughs deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential: to be introduced to possibilities for college and careers, to make lifelong friends who celebrate and support them, to learn in women-led spaces from caring mentors, and to chart their own course to achieve their goals. That’s what Troop 6000 is all about.
