New Yorkers, you may want to put away the short sleeve shirts and get out the hoodies, just for now.
Let’s rewind, though. New Yorkers have been basking in the warmth of spring lately, and it’s well deserved after the winter we experienced, with record breaking snowfall and freezing temperatures all around.
But after this brief and much-needed taste of spring warmth, the tri-state area is being pulled right back into winter’s grip.
According to the National Weather Service, a freeze warning is in effect from midnight to 8 a.m. Wednesday across parts of New York, Long Island, and northern New Jersey.
Temperatures are expected to drop sharply overnight, with lows ranging from 25 to 31 degrees, cold enough to create widespread frost and potentially damage early-season plant life.
We know, we know — “freeze warnings” are two words you do not want to hear right now. But as the age-old texts (aka the hilarious 12 Seasons of New York meme) remind us, we’re currently in what’s known as “spring of deception,” which checks out when you realize what’s coming next: third winter, arriving by this evening.
🌨️ What to expect tonight
- Clear but breezy conditions, with gusty northwest winds
- Overnight lows near freezing or below
- Widespread frost development likely by morning
The National Weather Service warns that these temperatures can kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, meaning any early blooms, garden plants, or outdoor greenery could be at risk if left unprotected.

❄️ Cold weather response
Both New York and New Jersey have issued Code Blue alerts, which are activated during dangerously cold conditions to help protect vulnerable populations.
Outreach teams typically distribute essentials like blankets, food, and hygiene supplies during these periods.
🗓️ The outlook ahead
The good news: this cold snap is short-lived. After a chilly Wednesday with highs around the upper 40s, temperatures will gradually rebound:
- Thursday: low 50s, partly sunny
- Friday–Saturday: warming into the 60s
- Early next week: a possible jump into the 70s and even 80s

So yes, this is very much a temporary relapse into winter. Still, for tonight, it’s worth taking precautions:
- Bring or cover sensitive plants
- Dress in layers if heading out early
- Check on anyone vulnerable to the cold
In other words, don’t pack away the winter coat just yet, spring in the Northeast still has a few tricks up its sleeve.
