Tax season is officially upon us, and while the city is many things, “cheap” is usually not one of them!
Everything is expensive: rent, food, utilities, and come the start of the year of year, taxes!
Many New Yorkers find themselves shelling out hundreds of dollars just to file their taxes, but this year that number may be shrinking.
Luckily, the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) is coming to the rescue with their NYC Free Tax Prep initiative, which was announced a weeks ago by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
To make things even easier, they’ve released a handy interactive map that shows you exactly where you can get professional tax help for $0.
Yes, that right’s: zero dollars.
Where can I find the map?
Available now for New Yorkers to use, the official NYC Free Tax Prep Map makes it so simple to find a location in your neighborhood.
The map allows you to filter by zip code, borough, and the type of service you need (In-Person, Drop-off, or Virtual).

Who is eligible for free tax prep?
The city offers these services to New Yorkers who meet certain income requirements.
For the 2026 tax season, the general eligibility is:
- Families with dependents who earned $85,000 or less in 2025.
- Single filers or couples without dependents who earned $59,000 or less in 2025.
If you fall into these categories, you can work with IRS-certified VITA/TCE volunteer preparers who will help you file your city, state, and federal taxes.
They also make sure you’re claiming important credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the NYC Childcare Tax Credit, which could put thousands back in your pocket.
What should I bring with me?
Before you head to one of the pins on the map, make sure you have your ducks in a row. You’ll generally need:
- Photo ID
- Social Security cards or ITINs for yourself and everyone on your return
- All tax forms (W-2, 1099, etc.)
- A copy of last year’s tax return (if you have it)
- Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit (so you get that refund ASAP!)
Why use this instead of a big-box preparer?
The average professional tax prep service can cost anywhere from $200 to $500, but by using the NYC Free Tax Prep sites, you’re not just saving that fee—you’re also ensuring you aren’t being hit with “hidden” charges or predatory refund-anticipation loans.
In terms of deadline, remember that Tax Day is Wednesday, April 15, 2026!
Don’t wait until the last minute to get your taxes done because the quicker it approaches, the more stressed you’ll be.
Check the map, book an appointment, and save that tax-prep money for something more fun (like finally seeing that Broadway show you’ve been eyeing).
