Though the NYC Ferry fare is preparing for a system-wide fare increase to $5 later this month, New Yorkers will have the opportunity to ride the waterways for free on select dates this October.
Every Thursday throughout the month, the NYC Ferry is partnering with the digital payments network Zelle to offer complimentary rides on specific routes. The initiative, aimed at reducing the financial strain of dating and socializing in the city, allows passengers to board without an RSVP or a ticket.
Combating the High Cost of Dating in NYC
With a super El Niño threatening a harsh winter, New York’s traditional “cuffing season” is approaching fast. However, the rising cost of living continues to impact social lives across the five boroughs.
According to Zelle’s upcoming New Economics of Dating Report, rising costs are actively rewriting the rules of romance.
The report notes that 84% of Gen Z and millennial daters say inflation and expenses have negatively affected their dating lives. By taking the cost of transportation out of the equation, the NYC Ferry and Zelle partnership is encouraging New Yorkers to explore new neighborhoods and support local businesses affordably.
Free NYC Ferry October Schedule
The free rides are available on a first-come, first-served basis on the following Thursdays:
- October 8: East River Route
- October 15: Rockaway–Soundview Route
- October 22: South Brooklyn Route
- October 29: Astoria Route
Passengers can view the full timetable on the official NYC Ferry website.
Affordable Date Spots Near Ferry Stops
To complement the free transit, Zelle has curated a map of budget-friendly local businesses located near various NYC Ferry landings. Featured local favorites include:
- Julia Jean’s Ice Cream (Lower East Side): Grab a nostalgic favorite before walking the neighborhood
- St Kilda Coffee (Midtown): An Australian-inspired café ideal for afternoon people-watching
- The Last Place on Earth (Brooklyn): A board game cafe perfect for breaking the ice over childhood favorites
- Delicioso Coco Helado: A New York staple where an $8 half-gallon tub of frozen sorbet is easily shared
