Though this spring has been pretty chilly and rainy so far one of the hottest summers of our lifetime is on its way, and just in time for that Travel & Leisure released their list of the 25 best beaches in the country, and two NYC beaches made the cut!
Several beaches in the Tri-State area were recognized as being some of the best, though when looking at New York specifically, Rockaway Beach in Queens (#16) and Coney Island Beach in Brooklyn (#25) both made the list!
Of Rockaway Beach the website writes:
This may not be a palm-tree-lined idyll, but for New Yorkers who can hop on a subway or bus to reach its white sand, five-mile boardwalk, and surf-worthy waves, it’s heaven. And it’s well worth the afternoon trip, as Rockaway Beach also features a skate park, volleyball and handball courts, playgrounds, spray showers, and restrooms. Barbecue areas for picnicking and eateries along the boardwalk ensure that no one goes home hungry.
One of the best things about Rockaway Beach is that it’s completely free to visit, plus there’s tons of places to cool down with a cold drink and get a bite to eat.
Arguably the most popular way to get to Rockaway Beach is by ferry–which has a new direct route straight to the Rockaways–though you can also take the subway, bus, or LIRR.

As for Coney Island Beach, the website writes:
Nothing pairs with salt air like the smell of hot dogs and the sound of Rollerblades on the boardwalk. If you’re seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city without having to go too far, Coney Island is a perfect seaside wonderland of nostalgia and kitschy fun. With miles of sand, this public beach is rich in history and tradition.
Similar to Rockaway Beach, there’s tons to do on Coney Island. Beachgoers can take a break from tanning on the sand at the beach’s volleyball, handball, and basketball courts, and there are playgrounds to keep children entertained all day long.
And, of course, everyone knows the beach’s iconic boardwalk that’s home to Luna Park, which has a brand new attraction opening later in the season known as Electric Eden Raceway!
Beyond New York, nearby beaches that also made the cut include Asbury Park Beach in New Jersey and Ocean Beach Park in Connecticut. The full ranking of the best beaches in the country can be found here.
