New Yorkers are finally getting a much needed financial break as the cost of keeping our apartments cool this summer continues to climb!
Gov. Kathy Hochul recently unveiled a massive state initiative designed to combat soaring utility bills, and it involves sending actual cash directly to residents.
The relief effort is expected to benefit a whopping 8.5 million families across the state who are tired of dreading their monthly energy statements.
Here’s more about whether or not you’ll be eligible.
What is the New York POWER program?
The state is officially rolling out the “Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate” program, fittingly known as POWER.
This $1 billion relief package was created specifically to ease the financial burden of extreme weather costs.
State officials know that blasting the AC all summer and cranking up the heat in the winter takes a serious toll on everyone’s bank accounts.
To combat these rising costs, the government is issuing advance credit checks.
The goal is completely straightforward: put money back into the pockets of hardworking locals so they can actually enjoy the city instead of stressing over electricity rates.
Who qualifies for the extra cash?
The exact amount of money you get depends entirely on your filing status and income bracket from your 2024 taxes.
Because the numbers can get a little confusing, here is the breakdown of what residents can expect to receive:
- $200 checks: Joint filers with a household income under $150,000
- $150 checks: Joint filers earning between $150,000 and $300,000
- $100 checks: Individual filers with an income under $150,000
Beyond falling into those specific income categories, there are a few other basic rules to keep in mind.
You need to have filed your 2024 New York State Resident Income Tax Return on time.
You also must have lived in the state for the entirety of 2024 and cannot be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return.
When will the rebate checks arrive?
The absolute best part of this entire initiative is that you do not need to lift a single finger to claim your funds.
There are no confusing applications to fill out or glitchy online portals to navigate.
Eligible New Yorkers will receive their POWER checks completely automatically in the mail.
Officials say the refunds are scheduled to be sent out between September and December of this year.
Just keep a very close eye on your mailbox this fall so you do not accidentally toss your energy relief right into the recycling bin!
