Us New Yorkers apparently have an unlimited ride pass on the struggle bus over here in NYC–a new study done by experts at Pacific Stone has identified the top ten states that struggle to relax after work, and New Yorkers, sadly, ranked first.
The study awarded each state a score out of 100 based on the a number of parameters, including:
- Average weekly work hours
- Typical driving commute time
- Whether the commute was tackled alone
- Household income inequality
- Average traffic volumes
Based on the numbers, New York was named as the state that struggles the most to relax after the workday, with a score of 90 out of 100. This is largely due to the average weekly work hours of 40.1 along with a daily driving commute time of 33.2 minutes (with almost two-fifths–39%–of drivers making the commute alone).
Moreover, additional factors including a high workload, stressful work environment, or fear of job loss can make it much harder to fully switch off after a work day, says the study.
Work/life balance is also a major factor though, on the bright side, NYers apparently have some of the best work/life balance in the country!
Colin Graham from the Pacific Stone team commented on the findings, stating:
With hustle culture rising in prominence online, it’s incredibly important to take care of yourself and ensure that you unwind at the end of the workday. Failure to do so increases the risk of burnout and may affect your physical and mental well-being.
If you ask us, we’ll be over here daydreaming about the possibility of a 4-day work week coming to NYC. And this year’s work calendar (aka the federal holidays that give us the day off) can be found here, so start planning that vacation!
