If you like to party until the next morning, New York State is apparently the place for you! According to a new study conducted by Suzuki Law Offices, New York is the safest state in the U.S. after dark.
Each U.S. state was assigned a safety score out of 100 using data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Crime Data Explorer and WorldPopulation Review from various categories including the infrequency of victim and society-related crimes and how many police officers there are for every 100,000 residents.
Coming out on top, New York earned its spot as the safest state for a night out on the town. It received a total safety score of 90.68/100. Not only does New York State have the lowest frequency in victim and society-related crime as a result of the data collected, but it also has the third highest number of police officers per 100,000 residents.
“The data highlights that some of the major tourist destinations in the United States, such as Florida and New York, have enough resources to ensure safety for both residents and tourists. However, Nevada, which is also a popular tourist spot due to Las Vegas, is not a very safe place…Moreover, the data suggests that many states located on the East Coast are comparatively safer in the evenings than some states on the West Coast,” shares Richard Suzuki from Suzuki Law Offices.
So which state is the most unsafe after dark? According to the study, Tennessee is the least safe state to go out at night. Ranking as the second worst state for victim-related crime and the 11th worst for society-related crime, on top of having just 177 officers per 100,000 residents, Tennessee received a safety score of 37.67/100. That’s less than half of New York’s score!
