As 2025 inches closer, we’re mapping out ways to ring in the occasion. Though we’re accustomed to New Year’s Eve fireworks in NYC, the pomp and circumstance will look a little different this year.
After the drought we faced this fall, and the subsequent wildfires in Prospect Park, Inwood Hill Park, and throughout New Jersey, NYC Parks will suspend the annual pyrotechnics.
New York Road Runners, which spearheads Central Park races and fireworks at the end of the year, revealed to The New York Times that its partners, City Hall and the Parks Department, had asked to halt the usual activities. “We are exploring other festive options,” a NYRR rep told the outlet. Though a drone show was once considered, it has been suspended following an accident in Florida where a young boy was hit in the chest and required open heart surgery.
Brooklyn still plans to replace its annual fireworks display in Prospect Park with a drone light show, despite the recent cancellation in Central Park. At this time, details are still minimal, but the celebration in the sky is said to be a presentation of NYC’s iconic attractions and landmarks. It will take place in Grand Army Plaza starting at 10pm on New Year’s Eve. Additionally, the fireworks in Times Square and over the Hudson River will continue as planned.
After the cancellations were announced, Mayor Adams lifted the fireworks and grilling ban in NYC as of December 9th. Should this change any plans for NYC parks — even days before the holiday — we’ll be sure to let you know.
