As part of JFK’s $19 billion transformation project, the airport will not only open a brand new Terminal 6, but their largest terminal to date, the New Terminal One.
So what can you expect from the airport’s soon to be largest terminal, sprawling 2.4 million square feet? The New Terminal One’s commercial program from Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) Airports, a leading operator for retail in major U.S. airports, will offer more than 300,000 square feet of lounge space and retail dining. Though they’ve yet to be announced, the New Terminal One will host several first-to-airport market brands.
Moreover, travelers will get to utilize the 23 new gates, naturally lit public spaces, technological advances and numerous amenities.
All five boroughs will be represented in the terminal set to evoke “a playful range of emotions one feels while in New York — from the luxury excitement and vibrancy of the Met Gala to the charm of the city’s neighborhood pockets and the lush nature of New York’s parks.”
The entire terminal will span the south side of the airport, covering what once was the former Terminal 1, 2, and 3. Since the $9.5 billion transformation is such a large project it will take place in various phases. Phase one of the New Terminal One will open sometime in 2026. This will include the first 14 gates and the new arrivals and departures halls. The entirety of the New Terminal One should be completed by 2030.
URW will focus on recruiting local-, women- and minority-owned businesses to operate within the terminal. “Visitors from around the world will be energized from the moment they enter the New Terminal One at JFK thanks to the locally inspired shops and restaurants that will reflect the diverse tastes and styles from across our region,” assures Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole.
