Looks like the East Coast is getting a taste of Hollywood.
The Netflix Studios Fort Monmouth location, which is on a former 292-acre US Army installation, will transform the region into a director’s paradise, à la Borden Studios in Long Island City and Robert DeNiro’s Wildflower Studios in Astoria, a.k.a. the world’s first-ever vertical film studio.
Netflix has broken ground on the project and will dedicate $1 billion to making the land a go-to resource for those in the movie world. Given that NYC is home to four out of the top 10 iconic landmarks favorited by movie-makers, we can’t say this new venture is unexpected.

“As the birthplace of the motion picture industry, New Jersey couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Netflix — a name synonymous with 21st century entertainment — to the Garden State,” said Governor Phil Murphy in a statement. “The Netflix studio at Fort Monmouth further solidifies New Jersey’s reputation as a global leader in film and television production, attracting some of the world’s top filmmakers and creators to the state.”
Netflix has contributed $125 billion to the US economy and hired more than 140,000 cast and crew members. Elected officials assure New Jersey residents that this new venture will provide similar economic opportunities for the state as well.
First Lady Tammy Murphy said, “As a global leader in entertainment and innovative storytelling, Netflix has completely re-shaped the industry as we know it today. While I look forward to seeing more New Jersey landscapes grace screens around the world, I am even more excited for the economic potential this studio brings to our state.”
Although these plans have been in the works for some time, it will take a bit longer for the project to come to fruition. Netflix expects Fort Monmouth Studios to be complete in 2028, as further approvals are needed before the work gets underway. Demolition is expected to take place in roughly 13 months, according to the Netflix.
“With this groundbreaking, we’re not only building a studio; we’re also strengthening our ties with the community and paving the way for a vibrant production ecosystem in New Jersey,” Governor Murphy added.
