During their attempts to rid the world of material that they deemed inappropriate, the Nazis tried to destroy every copy of the earliest known movie that depicts a romance between two men,”Different From the Others”. They missed one.
UCLA Film and Television Archive partnered with Outfest to fully restore the film to its former glory and it will make its East Coast premiere tonight (Friday October 21) at NewFest, the New York LGBT Film Festival.
“Different From the Others (1919)” was revolutionary at the time. It was the first film of it’s kind to depict a homosexual relationship in a sympathetic light. The story follows the life of a gay violinist and his relationship with his young protégé.
You will be able to catch the film tonight at 6:30 p.m. EST at the SVA Theater.
