Naples most famous pizza maker, Gino Sorbillo, has finally opened his first pizzeria in the States (Here in NYC!) Thought you’d already tried a real deal Italian pizza? Think again.
Back in July, we let you know that one of Naples most beloved pizza places was opening in NYC. Well, the time is finally here. Today (November 28) at noon, Gino Sorbillo Pizzeria landed.
Legend has it that the original pizza was invented in Naples; flatbreads with a variety of toppings was sold by street vendors to the poor workers of Naples. The believed creator of the pie, baker Raffaele Esposito, is said to have created a pizza for Italian King Umberto the first and Queen Margherita when they visited Naples in 1889… it is thought that this is where we get the infamous “Pizza Margherita” of today. Neapolitan pizza is so beloved that the recipe is regulated by law! Yes, everything from the flour in the dough to the cheese topping.
World-class pizzaiolo (pizza maker) Gino Sorbillo has finally made the move stateside, more specifically to Noho. Sorbillo is a celebrated chef in Naples where he runs “La Pizzeria Sorbillo” and now is the proud owner of Gino Sorbillo Pizzeria, where he opened at noon today at 334 Bowery (between Great Jones and Bond Streets).
Gino Sorbillo is widely regarded as Italy’s most famous and beloved pizza chefs. Though relatively unknown here in the States, Sorbillo is somewhat of a household name in Naples. His self-named pizzeria will be serving up his signature Neapolitan pies and promises to be about the closest thing you can get to a “real-deal” Italian slice. After all, if you can make it there, (in Naples as a pizzaiolo) you can make it anywhere. …see what we did there?
In Naples his pies inspire hour-long lines, it remains to be seen if it will be the same here… that being said, if we’re willing to wait for hours for a brunch, a world-class pizza might just leave us all waiting around the block. See you all in the queue.
