There’s one big holiday remaining on our 2024 calendar: New Year’s Eve. And while most years those that brave the crowds and the cold to watch the ball drop need to do so bundled up (and, well, with a diaper) this year you’ll be wanting to grab your raincoat becomes a storm’s a brewing.
According to AccuWeather meteorologists, it may rain on our parade this NYE, as rain and storms threaten to soak the Northeast and Northwest. So while the good news is you may not be freezing this year, the final hours spent counting down to 2025 may have to be done with an umbrella in hand. CBS meteorologists said it best: “Temperatures will be climbing. And rain will be falling.”
AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok stated:
We’re going to be tracking multiple storms…during the final days of December and early part of January. There can be a storm that arrives New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day that has the potential to produce a mix of rain and snow for the Northeast…[and] rain could arrive before the ball drops in Times Square.
Pastelok did add, though, that the timing of the rain hitting Times Square “remains in flux and [is] something [they] will continue to monitor.” CBS meteorologists are forecasting the rain to arrive shortly after midnight this weekend on Saturday, December 28th. And, though spotty at first, temperatures will affect how impactful the initial round of rain will be.
Beyond Saturday, the rain will be pretty steady as a wave of showers moves in Sunday evening, and lingers into Monday morning, December 30th. And the final push of showers will hit NYC right in time to ring in the new year, so be prepared for wet weather!
Beyond the rain CBS meteorologists note that, though December has been the coldest month of the year so far, we’ll be ending the year on a much milder note. Temperatures typically average around 42º for this time of the year, though the last few days of 2024, New Year’s Eve included, will climb into the 50s.
Thankfully, there’s always fun things to do in NYC–even on a rainy day!
