New York City Transit has officially opened an auction for a limited number of iconic MetroCard Vending Machines (MVMs) and MetroCard Express Machines (MEMs).
Whether you are looking to create the ultimate NYC-themed memorabilia room or just want an unforgettable conversation starter, here is everything you need to know about getting your hands on one.
How to submit a bid
The auction officially opened on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at 8 a.m. and will run until Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at 8 p.m.
To place your bid, you will need to fill out the official online form on the MTA site. If your bid wins, you must be ready to submit full payment by the close of business on the day you are notified.
What to know about the machines
These colorful metal staples have been a part of daily NYC life since January 25, 1999, when the first MVMs were installed.
Before you bid, keep in mind these machines are HEAVY:
- MetroCard Vending Machines (MVMs): Weigh around 1,050 pounds and measure 80 inches long, 42 inches wide, and 36 inches deep.
- MetroCard Express Machines (MEMs): A bit more apartment-friendly, weighing 210 pounds and measuring 21 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 42 inches high.
All machines are sold in non-operational, as-is condition. The electronic and payment processing components have been entirely removed prior to the sale.
Pickup and transportation details
Winning a machine is only half the battle—getting it home is entirely on you.
- A limited quantity of machines are available for pickup in Brooklyn, while the rest must be picked up in Queens.
- You must pick up your machine within 10 calendar days of notification.
- The MTA will not offer loading assistance or equipment, so make sure you bring a heavy-duty vehicle and enough people to help you load it.
