It’s about time…
The buses driving around Staten Island are getting quite old and like a lot of the current public transportation in NYC, in desperate need of an upgrade. The good news is that regular riders on local and Select Bus Service routes operating out of the Yukon Bus Depot are in for a treat, because it looks like we’ll be saying bye-bye to the 2009 Orion Hybrid buses and hello to the much needed brand new, shiny and modern bus replacements.
Once these babies are fully operational by the end of the year, not only will you be spoiled with Wi-Fi, screens, USB charging ports and more, but your commute will be 100% less treacherous. You might have noticed a few (41 to be exact) on the road already, as the MTA’s ambitious goal for the end of 2019 is to roll out a total of 77 modern buses.
Other noteworthy points from the announcement include, the addition of 50 new coach buses for the borough’s express routes by 2021 and OMNY tap-n-pay options on all Staten Island buses. By improving overall service on Staten Island, the aim is to hopefully pave the way for more reliable and convenient transit options around the island for the foreseeable future.
