From eggnog to coquito and everything in between, the holiday season brings with it all of the festive boozy drinks to sip on before a booze-free Dry January, but there’s one festive drink us New Yorkers like to sip on the most, making it the most popular Christmas drink in NY.
According to a study by Tasting Table, if you like to fill your glass with Christmas sangria you’re not alone–apparently all New Yorkers have the same idea!
Our admiration for the drink actually makes us quite unique as only two other states on the list–Massachusetts and South Carolina–choose Christmas sangria as their holiday drink of choice as well.
Moreover, the drink itself can be pretty unique as there are endless combinations you can create when making it, starting with choosing either white or red wine as the base and then pretty much adding whatever fruits you like. Some ingredients that do seem to remain pretty consistent though over numerous recipes include cranberries, rosemary, and cinnamon sticks.
If sangria isn’t really your jam though don’t fret–there are tons of other cocktails to choose from, the most popular overall being the poinsettia cocktail.
The poinsettia cocktail, which gets its name for its festive, bright red hue reminiscent of the poinsettia flower, is made using champagne, cointreau (or triple sec), and cranberry juice. It’s the most popular cocktail in twelve states.
Other popular holiday cocktails include mulled wine, Christmas punch, a hot toddy, coquito, and wassail (a drink made from hot mulled cider, ale, or wine and spices), among others.
The team at Tasting Table used a collection of data based on internet search trends to complete the ranking. They rounded up the top 15 most searched for Christmas drinks across the whole country and then used Google Trends to find out which drinks had the highest increase in search traffic over the last month.
