Though most questioned if New Yorkers could really be as festive as Italy, singing out on their balconies in these trying times (did you see Trevor Noah’s take?!), one Morningside Heights community is trying!
Gretchen Connelie shared videos of the residents of her building in Morningside Heights all leaning out their windows to sing different songs, which she said has been happening now every evening at 7pm.
They range from “Hey Jude” to “My Girl” to “Yellow Submarine” to “We Shall Overcome” (with a little twist on the lyrics).
“The woman with the guitar and the other gentleman in the adjoining apartment appear to have planned it,” Gretchen explained via email. “Others joined in above and below…There was even a violin and a horn at some point. One of the videos is when they started singing ‘We Shall Overcome’ and on the second verse they changed the words to ‘We Shall Wash Our Hands’.”
“I’m excited for this to keep going and especially now that all of my work has disappeared (I’m a freelancer), I’m happy to have something on my schedule to look forward to,” she added. “Even more fun is that some of my neighbors have seen the video on social media and now we’re connected through those platforms having never met before.”
Just the heartwarming story we needed!
