One of the most celebrated museums in New York City, The Museum of Modern Art, are leaning into their popularity by staying open late on weekends until the end of the year.
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in Midtown (53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues), is often cited as one of the largest and most influential museums of modern art in the world. Their collection offers an overview of modern and contemporary art, including works of architecture and design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, illustrated books and artist’s books, film, and electronic media.
In 2016, 2,788,236 people visited the Museum of Modern Art making it number 17 in the most visited museums in the world. These figures, published in The Art Newspaper Review back in April, clearly show that there is a need to react to the growing popularity. Perhaps for that reason, the MoMA is extending its Friday and Saturday evening hours. They will stay open until 9 pm both days until the end of the year.
The late opening hours will also apply to the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, weather permitting of course, as well as snacks and cocktails being available for purchase throughout the evening until the museum closes.
This is amazing news for New Yorkers that have to work late into the evening. Not only does this give us the opportunity to visit the MoMA and its many exhibits when it would otherwise be impossible, but opens the door for hyper-cultural date nights. Swipe right people, time to enjoy some cocktails and modern art with your bae, until the end of the year at least.
