Though Manhattan’s Upper East Side is an affluent neighborhood known for its extravagance, it’s also home to many cozy staple spots, but unfortunately this one has reached the end of its run.
Neighborhood staple Mini Deli will officially close its doors for good tomorrow, Friday, April 26th.
Mini Deli first opened in 1978, and has been operating for over four decades. It’s best known for serving up delicious Italian grub, homemade soups, and authentic espresso, and over time acquired a loyal customer base.
Owner Pino Cinquemani, who’s been in charge for 35 years, told Linda Schmidt of FOX 5 NY the decision to close stemmed from rising costs related to running a business. Cinquemani told Schmidt:
Cost of food went up so much, cost of doing business in general went up so much. Taxes are ridiculous.
According to Schmidt Cinquemani also mentioned how the neighborhood is much quieter now and foot traffic has died down, making it nearly impossible for a small mom and pop shop to stay afloat. Cinquemani has been looking for a job himself to transition into once closing the business.
Needless to say, customers are heartbroken.
Mini Deli is located at 1266 Second Avenue, between East 66th and 67th Streets.
