When the pandemic began to wreak havoc on NYC, many residents left in a panic. And once the numbers came in, a staggering 1,453 millionaires were reported to have fled the city they called home in 2021–and 520 more than that departed in 2020.
Well, as it turns out, there’s no need to panic, because there’s no millionaire shortage–more millionaires than ever are currently calling NYC home.
While 1,400+ millionaires said their goodbyes to the Big Apple, NYC actually gained about 10,000 millionaires between 2020 and 2021 according to the New York Times.
In fact, there are currently 80,000+ big ballers taking up residence in NYC.
According to data by Henley & Partners, New York takes the crown as the wealthiest city in the world, and the U.S. in general dominated the world’s Top 20 Cities with the most millionaires in 2022, with San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Dallas all securing spots on the list.
As for the ones who left, many flocked to New Jersey, Florida and Connecticut. And considering NYC rent reached record highs this past January, we wouldn’t be surprised if more people continued to pack up and head out into the unknown.
As for us, we’ll be staying right here, waiting until the day we’re one of those 80,000 NYC millionaires.
