The New York Mets are back in the playoffs for the 2024 season. A new fan favorite in Grimace and Mets fans have turned the season around after a disastrous start. If you’re in New York and thinking about catching a game, here’s what you need to know about supporting the Mets.
The Mets will face the Brewers in Milwaukee at American Family Field for the Wild Card series, starting Tuesday, October 1st. But if they advance, they’ll return to Citi Field in Queens, New York, for the next round. Citi Field is located in Flushing, Queens, easily accessible by subway and car, and offers an exciting atmosphere for playoff baseball.
Who are the stars of the New York Mets?
If you’re new to baseball, here are some key players to watch:
🌟 Francisco Lindor – The Mets’ superstar shortstop, Lindor has been an MVP candidate in 2024, hitting 33 home runs and stealing 29 bases. He’s the leader of this Mets team both on and off the field.
🐻❄️ Pete Alonso – Known as “The Polar Bear,” Alonso is a power hitter who consistently hits over 30 home runs a season. He is in the final months of his contract and this could be his last chance of winning as a Met.
🎺 Edwin Díaz – The Mets’ dominant closer, Díaz missed last season due to injury but is back and remains one of the top relief pitchers in the league.
☄️ Sean Manaea – As a left-handed starting pitcher, Manaea has been key to the Mets’ pitching staff. Look for him to play a major role in the postseason.
The Mets had a strong September, finishing with a 17-9 record, but they struggled towards the end. They certainly have a chance to get past the Wild Card round and Milwaukee.
The Mets would then face Philadelphia in the NLDS, as the Phillies have a first-round bye. If things continue to go their way, the Mets will advance to the NLCS. Then, they would face the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego, or Atlanta.
If they make it to the World Series, there’s a pretty good chance New Yorkers will have a Subway Series. The New York Yankees are favored to win the American League and go to the World Series.
When was the last time the Mets made the playoffs?
Since assuming they would be in a rebuilding process in mid-2023, the Mets are now well ahead of that process. In 2022, the Mets made the playoffs, losing a three-game wild card series at home to San Diego. They were expected to miss out on the playoffs in the short term, but have turned things around.
If you’re planning to attend a playoff game at Citi Field, be sure to wear your blue and orange Mets gear, bring plenty of energy, and enjoy the playoff atmosphere! Even if you can’t make it to the stadium, local sports bars across New York City will be packed with Mets fans cheering on their team.
