Someone please explain to us how the last 8pm sunset of the year is already upon us. It feels like just yesterday that we were rejoicing in longer, lighter days. Alas, it’s time to bid them adieu before winter arrives, and with it, shorter, darker days.
Although we’re being a bit melodramatic, who doesn’t want summer to last forever? Well, actually with this week’s heat, maybe we take that back!

However, regardless of our feelings, earlier sunsets are afoot. Sunday, August 10th will be NYC’s last 8pm sunset of the year. On that day, sunrise will occur at 6:01am, so you better wake up early if you want to take full advantage of the almost 14 hours of daylight.
In good news, the sun will continue to set after 7:30pm for majority of the month. It’s not until the last day of August (August 31st) that we’ll see a sunset before 7:30pm (it will set at approximately 7:29pm). Moreover, we have five months until the winter solstice on December 21st, 2025 (aka the shortest day of the year in terms of daylight).
