The world’s most famous mouse is about to have his 90th birthday, and there’s an art exhibition that’s opening in NYC to celebrate.
During the summer, Disney announced that an art exhibit was coming to Chelsea that would honor Mickey Mouse’s 90th anniversary…and opening day is upon us! The exhibit will open to the public tomorrow, November 8, and his birthday bash will take place in a 16,000-square-foot space at 60 10th Avenue filled with things completely dedicated to Mickey.
“Mickey: The True Original Exhibition” is the celebration of the iconic cartoon mouse’s influence on art and culture. It will feature works by all “artists past, present and future and we will have archives and contemporary art,” according to the exhibit curator and designer Darren Romanelli. The immersive experience will of course be insta-worthy,and some artists have even uploaded sneak peeks into the exhibit through their instagram posts!
Some influencers were able to see the space earlier this week too, and here’s a look into what you can expect:
Additionally, Disney released a video into one of the rooms, “Cosmic Cavern,” which was inspired by the Mickey Mouse Watch! If you’re a fan of Mickey Mouse (and Disney in general), you probably already know about the hidden Mickeys scattered throughout the parks. As a nod to the fun Disney World never-ending scavenger hunt, the artist for Cosmic Cavern, Kenny Scarf, decided to sneak some hidden Mickeys into the fun and fluorescent exhibit room.
This immersive world seems like nothing you’ve probably seen before when it comes to Disney productions—and we’re excited to check it out! We’re thinking it’ll be: NYC’s “Club 57” exhibit meets childhood nostalgia. Artists currently expected to be featured include Kenny Scharf, Shinique Smith, Amanda Ross-Ho, and Darren Romanelli, with more artists to come.
Tickets are $38 and you can already buy them through disney.com/mickeytrueoriginal. The exhibit is expected to run through February 10.
