Monroe, New York, is the kind of place that shouldn’t have any business holding two Guinness-tier claims to fame at once.
By day, it’s home to Museum Village, a 19th-century living history site where the star attraction is Harry, one of the three most complete mastodon skeletons ever discovered, unearthed practically in the town’s backyard and named after nearby Harriman.
By night, starting this September, that same stretch of road becomes home to something considerably less prehistoric and considerably more terrifying.
Pure Terror Scream Park, the Guinness World Record holder for the longest walk-through horror attraction on Earth, reopens for its 2026 season on September 18, and it’s bringing a brand-new nightmare with it.
Pure Terror Scream Park
It’s one of Upstate NY’s quickly emerging fall getaways, giving even the spooky Sleep Hollow a run for its money. Here’s what to know about this terrifying scream park, and how to plan a trip around it.
The record nobody can beat
Guinness didn’t just take Pure Terror’s word for it.
The park’s haunted route was independently measured at 1,933.72 meters, just over 6,344 feet, and certified as the longest walk-through horror attraction in the world back in 2015, a record that still stands today.
That’s not a marketing phrase, it’s a literal measured fact, verified the same way world records for bridges or buildings get verified.
Stretched across that distance are 10 separate haunted house attractions, each one built as its own self-contained nightmare rather than a single long hallway of jump scares.
Guests typically spend 60 to 90 minutes moving through the full route, which tells you everything about the scale of what’s actually waiting inside.
What’s new for 2026
Alongside returning fan favorites like Bedlam State Asylum, The Crypt, and Panic Attack Extreme, this year’s headline addition is Gargoyle Den.
The premise: stone guardians that have watched over an abandoned cemetery for centuries have finally woken up, and guests have to descend into crumbling crypts where the statues no longer stay still.
Some watch from above. Others, according to the park’s own description, walk among the crowd.
Of course there’s plenty more too, with the full 2026 lineup including:
- Gargoyle Den (new for 2026)
- Panic Attack Extreme
- Scapegrace High
- Bedlam State Asylum
- The Crypt
- Resurrection Cemetery
- Psycho Circus
- Desecration
- Legends of Horror
- Pumpkin Alley
Between attractions, the Monster Courtyard and Midway function as the park’s decompression zone, seasonal drinks, horror merch, photo ops, and classic carnival food for anyone who needs a minute before diving back into the next haunted house.

A town that splits the difference between history and horror
What makes Monroe worth the trip beyond the scares is how little the town telegraphs any of this.
It’s a quiet Orange County village that spent decades known mainly for Museum Village’s 19th-century schoolhouses, general stores, and blacksmith shops, the kind of place built for field trips, not fright nights.
Pure Terror sits practically next door to that same historic property, which means the same road that leads to a mastodon skeleton also leads to one of the most extreme haunted experiences in the country after dark.
Getting there from NYC
Pure Terror sits about 40 miles from Manhattan, at 1008 NY-17M in Monroe, and there’s more than one way to make the trip:
- By car: Roughly 50 to 60 minutes via the George Washington Bridge to I-87 North, then Route 17 West to Exit 129, with on-site parking available.
- By bus: The ShortLine/Coach USA bus runs directly from Port Authority to the Monroe Park & Ride, a short walk or quick rideshare from the park entrance.
- By train: Metro-North’s Port Jervis Line runs to Harriman Station, with a final 10-minute rideshare to close the gap.
Tickets start at $44.98 and are already on sale, with the season running select nights from September 18 through Sunday, November 1, plus a special Thursday opening on October 29.
Peak October weekends tend to sell out, so locking in a date early is worth it!
