For a spooky, storybook fall escape, New Yorkers repeatedly opt for Sleepy Hollow.
Between the eerie lore of resident Washington Irving’s tales, countryside environs, and the quaint charm of Beekman Ave, the real-life Halloween town is considered the preferred autumn pitstop, according to a recent Secret NYC poll.

So, what about the town’s spooky splendor continually has Halloween enthusiasts coming back for more? It might not be an under-the-radar locale — some might even argue it’s a bit cliché — but there’s a reason it’s permanently etched in our hearts.
From new opportunities to classic, can’t-miss experiences, we’ll tell you why we’re head over heels for the spooky spot. (See what we did there?)
Things to do in Sleepy Hollow — new activities, classic haunts, and more
Did you know Sleepy Hollow was only recognized as such beginning in 1996? Once considered North Tarrytown, the Westchester destination was renamed to honor its literary roots and autumnal vibes.
Nearly 30 years later, the moniker is living up to the hype thanks to beloved attractions. For example, The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, known for its spectacular 90 acres of 19th and 20th century architecture, is the final resting place of illustrious figures like Andrew Carnegie, Elizabeth Arden, William Rockefeller, and perhaps most notably of all, Washington Irving.

Speaking of the literary mastermind behind The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle, Irving’s tudor-styled home, Sunnyside, is a common pitstop for those visiting the neighborhood. And, as you might’ve suspected, after perusing the grounds, visitors book an evening tour of The Great Pumpkin Blaze — a New York tradition at Van Cortlandt Manor.
If you’re looking to step away from the proverbial pitstops, check out what else is on our radar this spooky season.
Tarrytown Music Hall

The oldest theater in Westchester is still keeping busy with a slew of entertainment options that cater to its autumn-obsessed audience: a screening and celebration of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (October 25th), a chat with paranormal researcher Amy Bruni (October 26th) and yes, even your typical comedy shows — Kevin James is stopping by in September — and film screenings.
For the more adventurous and paranormally curious, attendees are welcome for another type of entertainment: ghost tours of the theater.
