At Letchworth State Park—the massive 14,000-acre destination affectionately nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the East“—you don’t have to stay on the hiking trails to catch a view. Instead, you can drift right over towering 600-foot cliffs, rushing waterfalls, and the dramatic Genesee River Gorge in a hot air balloon.

Roughly the size of Manhattan, Letchworth State Park spans over 14,000 acres just west of the Finger Lakes region.
Millions of years ago, this entire area was part of an ancient inland sea before the Genesee River carved out a winding, 17-mile-long canyon. Long before it became a park, these lands were cherished and inhabited by the Seneca Nation.
Today, it’s widely considered one of the most scenically stunning areas in the eastern U.S. Deep within its lush forests, you’ll find three major roaring waterfalls—Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls—nestled between sheer slate and sandstone cliffs, alongside dozens of smaller, hidden cascades.
🎈 The Flight Experience
The rides are operated out of the park by Liberty Balloon Company (who acquired the park’s legacy flight operations, Balloons Over Letchworth). All flights originate directly from within the park itself—often launching adjacent to the magnificent Middle Falls.
- The Timeline: Expect to be floating weightlessly for 45 to 60 minutes, though you should clear 3 to 4 hours for the entire experience (including pre-flight safety briefings and the traditional post-flight toast)
- Basket Capacity: Shared baskets hold 4 to 8 passengers, making it a great group activity, but private flights can be booked for couples
- The Flight Path: Because hot air balloons rely entirely on the wind, no two flight paths are ever exactly the same. You might catch the morning mist rising off the Genesee River or watch the golden hour sun sink behind the gorge
⚠️ The Weather Reality Check: Hot air ballooning is highly sensitive to wind speeds and atmospheric conditions. In the Northeast US, the weather cancellation rate is over 50%.

📋 Physical Requirements to Know Before You Go
While floating is serene, landing can occasionally be an athletic event.
If the wind picks up, the basket may bump, drag, or tip on its side during landing–which is a normal part of operation. Because of this, passengers must be able to:
- Stand unassisted for the entire 1-hour duration of the flight (there are no seats or walkers allowed)
- Climb over the basket wall to enter and exit (the sides are roughly 3.5 to 4 feet high with no doors)
- See over the edge of the basket comfortably (the minimum age for passengers is 7 years old)

Booking Deadlines
You can cancel or change your booking up to 72 hours in advance. Within that 72-hour window, refunds are only issued if the pilot cancels the flight due to safety or weather.
What to Wear
Dress for an outdoor trek. Jeans and sturdy, closed-toe shoes are highly recommended, as morning grass is often heavy with dew. Bring a hat to shield your head from the heat of the balloon’s burners!
🚗 How to Get There from NYC
Letchworth State Park is located in Western New York (near Castile and Mount Morris), making it a perfect long-weekend road trip or an addition to a Finger Lakes getaway.
- By Car (Recommended): It’s a scenic 5.5 to 6-hour drive (approx. 310 miles) from Manhattan. Taking I-80 W out of the city or heading up the NY-17 W/I-86 W corridor will take you through beautiful stretches of the Catskills and Southern Tier
- By Public Transit: You can take a FlixBus from Midtown Manhattan to Mount Morris (the town right outside the park), which takes around 7 hours. Alternatively, you can take the Amtrak from Penn Station to Rochester, followed by a 40-minute Uber or rental car ride down to the park
