Yesterday afternoon a genuine hero emerged from the Hudson river. Kevin Suarez, 20-year-old, selflessly dove into the water off the Ellis Island shoreline, swam 70 feet, and saved a little girl trapped under the water in a capsized boat.
The 15ft boat overturned at around 2:00 p.m. trapping the 5 year old and leaving 5 others treading water. When the young man arrived at the capsized vessel one of the passengers shouted about the trapped girl.
“The boat was completely on her […] as soon as I pulled her out, she was gasping for air and crying.” he told NBC New York. The same report stated that the boat’s water pump had failed, causing it to take on water. All the survivors are said to be in stable condition.
