Just 10 days after opening, Herald Square’s first-ever Herald Holiday Market caught flames on Monday, December 16th around 4am. It wasn’t until around an hour after the flames erupted that the fire was under control thanks to the FDNY.
Urbanspace commented:
We are heartbroken to share that a fire occurred early this morning on the northside of our Herald Holiday Market at Broadway and 36th Street, resulting in the destruction of a number of small business booths. This is a devastating moment for our market family, especially during what should be a joyful holiday season.
According to AMNY, one firefighter was injured on-site and taken to NYU Langone Tisch-Hospital.
The cause of the fire is uncertain. Urbanspace is actively working with officials to determine what it could have been and to ensure that other areas of the market are safe and secure.
As of noon on Monday, December 16th, the unaffected areas of the market from 34th to 35th Streets remain open to the public. If you still need to get some holiday shopping done, there’s no better time than now to come out and support the remaining operating vendors at the Herald Holiday Market.
As of Wednesday, December 18th, the market fully reopened. Unfortunately, the 18 vendors that were heavily impacted by the fire will not reopen this year. As a result, Urbanspace has started a GoFundMe campaign with 100% of the funds raised going to those small businesses.
The market will remain open until January 3rd, 2025.
