A helicopter crashed into the East River late Sunday night, killing five people.
Tragedy struck last night when a private helicopter chartered for a photo shoot crashed into the East River and flipped upside down. Five out of the six people on board the helicopter were killed. Although divers worked quickly and desperately to pull the passengers out from the wreckage, two died on the scene and three others died later on in the hospital. According to officials, the pilot freed himself and was rescued by a tugboat. At a press conference later in the evening, New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro called it a “great tragedy.”
At the moment, the Federal Aviation Authority is investigating the cause of the incident.
