Hamilton fans, get ready–for the first time ever, the Tony Award-winning Broadway phenomenon is heading to the big screen. On The Tonight Show, Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that the Hamilton movie will debut in theaters on September 5th, and tickets are already on sale nationwide.
“We always wanted to release it theatrically…Now, you can experience Hamilton on the big screen like never before,” Miranda shared on The Tonight Show.
Most of the original cast of the show–including Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs, and Jonathan Groff–was filmed performing back in June 2016.
Although that footage was originally scheduled for a 2021 theatrical release, the pandemic changed those plans. Instead, Hamilton launched on Disney+ in July 2020, quickly becoming one of the most-watched releases on the platform.
Now, a decade after the stage show’s premiere, fans will get the chance to see it as it was meant to be seen–on the big screen.
The theatrical version is a “live capture” of the production, filmed at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre. It expands on the Disney+ version with exclusive bonus content titled “Reuniting the Revolution”–a brand-new prologue with interviews from the cast and creators reflecting on the show’s legacy ten years after its debut.
Director-producer Thomas Kail stated:
When we filmed Hamilton we wanted to try to capture the feeling of being in the Richard Rodgers Theatre during that first year on Broadway, and we’re thrilled that audiences will now have the opportunity to experience it on the big screen.
Tickets for the film are now on sale. It’s set to be released in U.S. theaters on September 5th.
Special Premiere Screening in Central Park
On September 3rd, a special advance screening will take place at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, where Hamilton first premiered at The Public Theater.
A limited number of advance tickets will be available for a donation (benefiting The Public Theater) starting August 11th, and the rest will be distributed via free lottery at The Public Theater on September 3rd or standby line in Central Park prior to the screening.

- A citywide scavenger hunt with free ticket prizes (now through Sunday, August 24th)
