A new skyscraper is coming to East Midtown, and it’s bringing a pedestrian plaza with it.
One Vanderbilt will be the first new office building to open near Grand Central (and the East Midtown area in general) in over 50 years, and has already topped out at 1,401 feet! Scheduled to open in August, the new addition will also include a designated pedestrian plaza that will connect the offices to Grand Central Terminal as part of SL Green’s $220 million investment to improve Grand Central’s public transit infrastructure.
Some improvements that have already been done include new staircases between the mezzanine and platform levels of the 4, 5, and 6 subway lines, and upcoming improvements include enhancing connections to Metro-North and the shuttle to Times Square, new street-level subway entrances, and a 4,000 square foot public transit hall for commuters within the One Vanderbilt building that’ll be connected to the new plaza.
The “Vanderbilt Plaza” will span a 14,000-square-foot area along Vanderbilt Avenue between East 42nd and East 43rd Streets.
