New York is one of the best cities in the world when it comes to art, because there’s always a museum to go to and new exhibition to see. This May, make sure you catch the annual art fair that’s being put on by media and events company, Frieze.
Although the actual art fair held on Randall’s Island Park doesn’t start until next week, the free outdoor public display at Rockefeller Center officially started yesterday. Held until June 28th, this is one of the newest art initatives brought to the city in collaboration with Frieze and Tishman Speyer. Over the course of the next two months, new sculptures from 14 international artists will be added around the Rockefeller campus for all to explore and enjoy. For a full list of names and a helpful map to locate the various sculptures, refer to the Rockefeller website here.
The pictured sculpture at the top of this article is called ‘Behind the Walls” by Spanish artist, Jaume Plensa. His notorious faces are widely recognised for their distinct elongated structure and can be found scattered in cities across the globe.
Frieze Media as a whole is comprised of the following main components: friezemagazine, Frieze Masters Magazine, Frieze Week, their programme of courses/talks at Frieze Academy, their website frieze.com (the go-to place for contemporary art) and last but not least, their international art fairs held in London, LA and New York. The eighth edition of Frieze New York 2019 is dedicated to bringing together top galleries from around the world and exposing visitors to different types of artists (from contemporary to 20th century).
From learning about Latin American art to New York’s budding gallery community, this eclectic four day fair will have talks, events, pop-ups of restaurants and more, all taking place on the gorgeous location of Randall’s Island Park.
