Okay, sure–the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is up and the city’s many winter markets are beginning to open for festive holiday shopping, but winter hasn’t got us in her icy grips yet. What we’re trying to say is that fall is still here, and contrary to popular belief you don’t have to trek to the Catskills for some farm-fresh apples.
For one day only this November, an apple orchard is popping up in Midtown, allowing New Yorkers to pick their own fresh apples, no Metro-North trip required.
The orchard is the work of The Farmlink Project and 260 Sample Sale, who are teaming up to highlight how moving surplus food can help families in need. Eliza Blank, CEO of The Farmlink Project, stated:
Every day, perfectly good nutritious produce from local farms goes to waste while families across the country struggle to put food on the table…This free event is…showing how moving fresh food that would otherwise go to waste can make a real difference for those in need.

For one day only, on Tuesday, November 25, 261 Fifth Avenue will be transformed into a pop-up apple orchard, giving away 20,000 pounds of farm-fresh, locally grown New York apples–enough for roughly 4,000 families.
Visitors can also enjoy warm cider and learn about how Farmlink reroutes surplus produce from farms to families in need nationwide.
While the apples are free, donations are welcome to further Farmlink’s nationwide food rescue efforts–including their goal to deliver 10 million pounds of food by Thanksgiving. Additionally, Carhartt will be onsite selling exclusive Carhartt x Farmlink hats and T-shirts, with proceeds supporting Farmlink’s mission to close the gap between surplus and scarcity.
Beyond the 20,000 pounds of apples available at the pop-up, Farmlink will donate an additional 15,000 pounds of apples to partner food banks all over NYC including in Harlem, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.
