Travel options might look a little different the next time you book a plane ticket out of town.
The FAA is extending flight cuts at Newark Liberty International Airport until October 2026 to increase efficiency and reduce traffic delays. Since late spring, the airport has been experiencing major disruptions and grounded flights. This effort is to keep them running smoothly while facing a shortage of air traffic controllers.

Though the Jersey hub is one of the key players in the air travel for the tristate area, you just might find yourself at JFK and LaGuardia more often.
According to an FAA press release, this initiative extends the June 2025 order limiting arrivals and departures through October 24, 2026. The FAA order also increases the hourly flight limit from 68 to 72 operations, but ultimately, this is down from the typical 80 flights from May, per Reuters.
Per CNBC, Transportation Department Office of Inspector General is planning to investigate the FAA’s 2024 decision to relocate Newark air traffic controllers to Philadelphia from New York to address staffing shortages and congestion in NYC. As findings develop, we’ll be sure to fill you in.
