Fishs Eddy, the beloved Union Square storefront, is catching the F train down to Dumbo, Brooklyn to open a brand new location this fall!
According to developer Two Trees Management, Fishs Eddy signed a 10-year lease at 81 Front Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The space will span 3,800 square feet, close to the size of its flagship Union Square location.
Julie Gaines, founder of Fishs Eddy, first opened her quirky store, full of American, vintage-inspired platters, cups, mugs and more, in 1986 with her husband after uncovering a wide collection of abandoned dishware in the city’s former restaurant supply district. The pair named the store after the Upstate hamlet, Fishs Eddy.
Gaines remarked:
Brooklyn’s been in our DNA forever. Some of our most iconic patterns have Brooklyn brownstones and the bridge…So moving to Brooklyn was just a matter of time. Of course, we’re fashionably late, but that’s how New Yorkers roll!
Shoppers will find the same eclectic selection at the Union Square store—think NYC-themed designs, witty mugs, dinner plates, and playful decor featuring clever phrases. According to 6sqft, the new location will open this fall.
While Fishs Eddy currently has just one store in Union Square, this isn’t the first time the shop has expanded its footprint. Previously, the brand operated multiple locations throughout Manhattan and even on Staten Island before consolidating to its current site.
Yet, whatever obstacles the shop has faced over the last 30 years—two recessions, 10 subway fare hikes, and one global pandemic—it hasn’t stopped it from becoming a community favorite that continues to thrive. Over the years, Fishs Eddy has welcomed more than 1.2 million tourists, serving three generations of customers.
The shop even gives secret tours to showcase Gaines’ collection of vintage restaurant-ware in the mezzanine over her store. “[It’s] truly a time capsule of American history and totally worth a visit,” Gaines wrote to us.
